Bowie song of the week – 2

The Jean Genie

Whether its the standard version or the jazzy/ RnB versions, this song captures his love of the weird and wonderful. Written in New York, the city he fell in love with and eventually moved to, it describes two kooky people who live in the city. Another song that, if you close your eyes and listen closely, conjures psychedelic dreams.

A classic Bowie song with the video shot in part outside the Mars Hotel, produced some great iconic images.

The line “He’s so simple minded, he can’t drive his module.” is thought to have inspired the name of the group Simple Minds.

“Starting out as a lightweight riff thing I had written one evening in NY for Cyrinda’s enjoyment, I developed the lyric to the otherwise wordless pumper and it ultimately turned into a bit of a smorgasbord of imagined Americana … based on an Iggy-type persona … The title, of course, was a clumsy pun upon Jean Genet” David Bowie 2005
